Revisiting the Attica Uprising
Inmates seized the maximum-security Attica prison on September 9, 1971 taking correction officers and civilian employees hostage.On September 13, then Governor Nelson Rockefeller ordered an assault on the prison.The brutal retaking left 39 dead – 29 inmates and 10 hostages.The hour long documentary will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by award winning journalist, Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reporter, and RIT adjunct professor, Gary Craig.Panelists include:Dee Quinn Miller - Ms. Miller’s father was a corrections officer killed during the uprising.Christine Christopher - Ms. Christopher, the local filmmaker whose documentary focuses on the political pressures of the era and the likely spark for the violent retaking.Minister Raymond Scott - Minister Scott served as an “observer” during the four day standoff, working as a liaison in negotiations between the inmates and the authorities.
