Event Name: ACM SIGCHI at RIT presents Joseph Konstan
Category: Lecture/Speaker
Sub Category: GCCIS
Description: Talk Title: Recommender Systems: Technology, User Experience, and Applications

From their emergence in the mid-90's, recommender systems have provided real-time personalization to help users identify products or information of interest. They have been widely adopted across online e-commerce--taking a central role in the user experience at leading sites such as Amazon.com. And they have been applied widely outside of commerce in applications ranging from library services to travel. This talk looks at the technology, user experience, and applications of recommender systems, with a focus on innovative research in each of the three areas. The talk is generally customized to the audience -- technical audiences may benefit from greater focus on recommender algorithms and the complex problems involved in scaling and evaluating them; less technical audiences may prefer a greater focus on innovative applications and user experiences.

Speaker Bio: Joseph A. Konstan is Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Distinguished University Teaching Professor and Associate Department Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. His research addresses a variety of human-computer interaction issues, including personalization (particularly through recommender systems), eliciting on-line participation, designing computer systems to improve public health, and ethical issues in research online. He is probably best known for his work in collaborative filtering recommenders (the GroupLens project, which recently won the ACM Software Systems Award).
