Event Details
Event Name: Stan McKenzie Salon Series:Are Disciplines too Specialized: an Experimental Collaboration between Journalism and Business
Category: Academic/College Events
Sub Category: College of Liberal Arts
Description: Journalists are faced with an ever-growing list of desired skills. Beyond fact-checking, interviewing and writing, journalists are expected to demonstrate competence in still and video photography, digital design, statistical analysis, computer coding, web development, marketing and fundraising. Ambitious aspiring journalists are often required to seek these skills in departments outside their own. In this talk, Dr. Andrea Hickerson (Communication) and Dr. Vic Perotti (Business) discuss their experience building a Digital Journalism Incubator at RIT, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which brings together students from seven different majors to create journalism start-ups. Specifically they will address the pros and cons of working in cross-functional teams versus developing cross-functional students.
