Event Details
Event Name: The Climate is Changing. What about Us?
Category: Sustainability
Description: Dr. Neil Leary, Director of the Center for Sustainability Education, Dickinson College
Dr. Leary has been a participant in the science assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since the 1990s, was a leader of the IPCC’s 2001 report on climate change impacts, adaptation and vulnerability, and is a member of the IPCC’s editorial board for its fifth comprehensive assessment report.

We face a “wicked problem’ that defies conventional solution. The human race treats the atmosphere as a free and boundless resource, dumping billions of tons of climate changing gases into it each year. The consequences of our polluting this global resource, as established by mounting scientific studies in numerous fields, and as summarized in the most recent reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, are changes in the atmosphere, climate, ice sheets and oceans that disrupt and destabilize natural and human systems, pose threats to food security, water security, human health and biodiversity, and put current and future generations of humans in danger. But are we changing in response to the dangers? What changes are we making, or could we make, to prevent dangerous changes in climate? What changes can we make to be more resilient to changes in climate that are beyond prevention? We will need strategies composed of many different actions, taken by many different types of actors, implemented at multiple levels from the very local to the global, and that look forward on time horizons ranging from the immediate to the very distant future.
