Description: Music in a Virtual Auditorium

The acoustical characteristics of performance spaces have always been important to the development of music, influencing both composers during the compositional process, and performers making on-the-spot decisions regarding the expressive nuances that bring compositions to life. In this experimental performance, we will demonstrate how recent audio engineering technologies make it possible to build a virtual auditory environment ideal for chamber music, regardless of the physical limitations of a specific space—the McKenzie Commons. Classical chamber music will be performed by students of the RIT String Quartet, and RIT music faculty members will perform solos, with the virtual auditorium built with RIT Engineering Technology.
