Civil Engineering & Construction Industry Career Fair

This Career Fair is for Civil Engineering Technology students and other students who have a strong interested in working in the construction industry. Students in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering & Technology, Electrical Engineering & Technology, and Environmental majors are welcome to attend IF you can talk with employers about WHY you want to work in the construction industry. This is not a general engineering career fair. Civil Engineering & Construction Industry Career Fair FAQWhere can I get a nametag? Bring your ID to the lobby of the Gene Polisseni Center on the day of the fair, swipe in and get a name tag. What companies will be attending? Find the list of companies attending in Handshake. The list will be updated as companies register so check back regularly. You can also use the RIT Career Fair+ app to see the list of companies. Be sure you have both the RIT version of the app and the most recent version. What should I wear? A suit is always professional and appropriate. Civil engineering/construction companies are ok with a more casual look; khaki pants, button-down shirt or polo, tie for men, etc. What should I bring? Lots of copies of your resume (30). Be sure that it’s been proof read and is perfect! Have a couple of copies of your transcript downloaded from SIS, although you may not need them. Bring a pad of paper and pen to take notes while the rep is telling you about the company and their co-op jobs.Which companies should I talk to? ALL of them, especially if you are looking for your 1st co-op. Use the list of companies available in Handshake or on Career Fair+ to research the companies and know which ones are design firms, construction, testing, etc. It’s ok to have a preference for one field but the first co-op can be the hardest and you may have to be open to experiencing something new or unknown. What do I say to the company rep? Don’t overthink this! Walk up, smile, look the person in the eye, shake their hand then introduce yourself. “Hello, I’m Maureen and I’m looking for a co-op in construction (surveying, testing, etc).” Have your resume ready to hand to the rep, give them a chance to look at it and they will take the conversation from there. How do I end the conversation? Be sure to ask them about their hiring process and their timeline. You want to know if they are hiring for a spring start or a summer start. Do they hire for single or double block? Are they going to call people for interviews this fall or not until the spring? As the conversation ends, ask if the rep has a business card. If they give you one, be sure to send a thank you email to follow up. If they don’t have a card you can say “you’ve got my resume with my email address, I hope to hear from you in the future.”Should I go to the RIT University-wide Career Fair too? YES!!! Some companies only go to the big RIT Career Fair and not the Civil Career Fair. Use every opportunity to get your resume to employers who might hire!!!Will there be interpreters there? Students must contact Access Services and schedule their own interpreters for the time they will be attending the fair. Interpreters will not be scheduled by the event organizer.
