21st Century Scholarship: Selecting and Assessing Publishers

Your research has been conducted and the paper is complete, now the question becomes, where will you publish? Amid the changing nature of the academic publishing world, along with the sheer number of publishers out there, this can be a daunting step. This panel discussion will cover topics such as assessing publishers to make sure they will meet your needs, rejecting publishers that won’t, avoiding predatory publishers, and ultimately choosing the right vehicle to disseminate your research. He provides scholarly communication support to several academic communities at Cornell, and manages two open access digital repositories: the Scholarly Commons, serving Cornell's School of Hotel Administration; and DigitalCommons@ILR, which serves the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. As such, he has spent years exploring publishers and their policies, to better advise scholars as they decide where and how to publish their work.Ilka Datig is the Head of Instruction & Outreach at Nazareth College, Lorette Wilmot Library. She has a MLIS from Syracuse University and an MA in Cultural Anthropology from New York University. She has published and presented on a number of topics, including intellectual property and scholarly publishing, user experience design, and ethnographic research methods in librariesMargaret Kearney, Ph.D., served as Associate Editor for two journals before becoming Editor-in-Chief of Research in Nursing & Health in 2012, a position she held until January 2018. She has published more than 100 articles, 38 of them on writing and publishing. As Vice Provost and University Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Rochester, Maggie oversees doctoral studies across the University and is a Professor in the School of Nursing.Amanda Page, Open Publishing/Collections Librarian at Syracuse University. In this role she wears many hats, including support for the institutional repository, open-access publishing workflows, author addenda, and rights and permissions. Publishing ethics, open-access, support for authors, and quality assessment, publication agreements, descriptive metadata, and rights are an everyday part of her work. Her work focuses on fostering quality open-access, policy development, education, and support for authors — and their voices.
