Strategies for an Inclusive Classroom
Jennifer R. Yates Assistant Director, Faculty Development Innovation in Learning CenterUniversity of South Alabama Mobile, Alabama Wednesday, September 5 1pm – 2pmBrown Hall-1110 (next to Lot S, set back) Abstract: Professional societies in higher education (AAC&U) and the sciences (AAAS, Society for Neuroscience, and others) are actively working to increase access and success for underrepresented groups in the sciences and related fields. For students to become scientists, engineers, or mathematicians, they must persist in their science courses and this means making our STEM classrooms more diverse and inclusive. This can feel like an overwhelming challenge, but there are small changes that instructors can make in the structure of courses, use of examples, and construction of assignments that can have a big impact in the classroom. Dr. Yates, a neuroscientist with 16 years’ experience in the classroom who now leads faculty development at the University of South Alabama, discusses small changes, particularly in the construction of assignments, that can lead to increased engagement and success of all students.
