2017 Fram Chair Signature Faculty Workshop and Luncheon

Our ability to solve complex problems often require the integration of knowledge from multiple disciplines and the establishment of teams that involve individuals from the private and public sectors.  A recent National Research Council report noted that “team science can lead to results with greater scientific impact, innovation, productivity, and reach than single-investigator approaches.” Research has shown that diverse teams achieve greater productivity, reach, and innovation. These teams also face challenges with communication and the sharing of knowledge and resources. This talk introduces efforts regarding research on knowledge negotiation and synthesis needed to support interdisciplinary teams, promotion of interdisciplinary research on UTEP’s campus, and support of diverse, interdisciplinary teams.  In addition, the talk will present models of interdisciplinary team work, discuss the development of communities of practice, and describe the community’s role in supporting diversity and collective impact.
